Kuala Lumpur — the locals just call it KL — not as if people would be confused with allergy medicine (LOL). It is a city of many shades. The city of sky risers at the same time holds the key to marketplaces that are as lively as a street riot. This city has more than enough to leave even the most well-travelled person baffled about what next.  What are the best things do in Kuala Lumpur? I have one day, 3 days or even a week of what to see and do in Kuala Lumpur.  Perfect! Let the show begin!

Petronas Twin Towers: Kuala Lumpur’s iconic skyline

A trip to Kuala Lumpur is never completed until you go to Petronas Twin Towers. The towers are 452 meters tall but no doubt the beauty of the city. This modernisation symbol of Malaysia just has to be part of your trip as you discover things to see in Kuala Lumpur.

There is a sky bridge situated on the 41st and 42nd floors. The sky bridge is popular and has a lot of beautiful views. Here, you can better understand Malaysia. An awesome place for people who love photography. Head on to the 86th floor where there is an observation deck. There’s so much to capture and put on your Instagram! Also shoot the view from KLCC Park, how beautiful it looks from evening time!

Pro Tip: On weekends go early to get your ticket otherwise tickets sold out. It’s at the top of many people’s bucket lists of things to do in Kuala Lumpur.

Batu Caves: A blend of culture, history and nature

Only a short ride from the city, Batu Caves is well worth a visit. The Hindu temple complex is built into limestone cliffs and guarded by an enormous, 140-foot tall, gold statue of Lord Murugan. Up the 272 colourful steps, you’ll be richly rewarded with fabulous views and some very good vibes. The caves are a natural marvel and one of the top attractions in Kuala Lumpur enjoyed by nature lovers and spiritual seekers alike.

The main Temple Cave is hung with Hindu shrines, layered with art and prayer. You won’t find this anywhere else, so it’s fascinating, for sure. Below is the Dark Cave, a reclusive ecosystem housing species that exists only here in the world. Book an early morning guided tour of the Dark Cave to really get what’s going on ecologically.

Side note: Go on an eco-tour through the Dark Cave and be awed by the sanctuary and its unique ecosystem. It’s one of the most amazing things to do in Kuala Lumpur for nature lovers.

What to see in Kuala Lumpur: Batu Caves

Merdeka Square: The heart of Malaysia’s history

This spot once marked the official proclamation of the Malaysian Peninsula’s independence in 1957, but now Merdeka Square is the steel heart of its Malaysian metropolis. It is a large expanse of green fields — a heritage walker’s dream — surrounded by beautiful colonial-era structures like the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, a regal confection of Moorish arcades and creamy layers of brick and plaster. This is a unique place to visit in Kuala Lumpur.

Merdeka Square is a parade ground for all things national and its massive 95m-high flag pole — a symbol of Malaysian patriotism — stands out amongst surrounding attractions around Kuala Lumpur. There are many historical places in Kuala Lumpur. However, if you need to know all the Merdeka Square history, here you must go to Kuala Lumpur City Gallery.

Fun Fact: After dark, the field is illuminated and a peaceful ambience envelops the area. It’s a lovely place to spend a few moments and simply breathe in the tranquillity!

Kuala Lumpur Tower: Breathtaking views from above

Just like the Petronas Twin Towers, it’s one of the things to do in Kuala Lumpur. Your next best alternative for a bird-eye view of the city. The 421-meter-long communication tower is also one of the tallest viewing platforms in Southeast Asia for you to get a panoramic (and let me also say, awesome!) view of the city.

But wait — I’m not done! The view isn’t the only good thing about this tower! Nowhere else do you get to dine in a revolving restaurant and that is, Atmosphere 360. Bring your visitors up to have a high and fancy meal. In addition, you get to challenge your fear of lying on that transparent Glass Box. A thrill and a half if you ask me! So go on and pose for the camera. It also shows that you love the adrenaline and you are adventurous! Plus points!!

Pro Tip: Arrive before the sun sets! I promise you that you will definitely not regret it! Oh and don’t worry, it is also suitable for kids.

Central Market: A Hub of arts, crafts and culture

Looking for souvenirs in Kuala Lumpur? You can check out the Central Market which sells most of the craft souvenir items made by hand, batik crafting and quirky finds. This historical site was set up in 1888 as a wet market. Now in the building, you can find craftsmanship and artisans sitting there doing their work for visitors to learn more about the colourful heritage.

It also has an Annexe Gallery, which features modern art displays, which is all the more interesting for art lovers. The open-air Kasturi Walk offers local eateries selling a variety of street food, snacks and desserts making it a little food haven.

Where: Jalan Hang Kasturi in KL city centre.

How to go: Pasar Seni LRT station (Kelana Jaya line) adjacent to Central Market.

Jalan Alor: The ultimate street food experience

Need a taste of authentic Malaysian food? Just make your way to Jalan Alor! This street will satisfy all your cravings — from flavoursome pots of satay to odorous scoops of Durian ice-cream, there is never a dull moment.

The street doesn’t really come to life until the sun goes down — at which point the lighted-up signs and the tempting aroma of cooking pots will lead any hungry soul to nasi lemak, char kway teow and Hokkien mee. Jalan Alor is quite literally a place that will definitely whet your appetite.

Favourite Dishes: Char kway teow and roti canai. You already know!

Bukit Bintang: The shopping and entertainment district

Bukit Bintang is the ‘happening joint’ for shopping, nightlife and entertainment in the city centre. The area consists of a variety of malls, luxury retail along with street food, entertainment and popular bars.

For partygoers, you’ll find a wealth of trendy bars and lounges to try out at night. Both the locals and foreigners flock to this street. Be entertained with live music and street performances, — a shopper’s haven in your itinerary.

Our insider tip: Don’t forget to visit and taste the popular street food at Jalan Alor, just a short distance away from Bukit Bintang.

Thean Hou Temple: A masterpiece of chinese architecture

Perched atop a hillock in the city, Thean Hou Temple is a visual stunner. The six-tiered temple dedicated to Mazu — the Chinese sea goddess — is an architectural marvel done up in a mix of modern and traditional styles. The intricate carvings, bright colours and dragon motifs make it quite a sight.

Fringed by gardens and koi ponds, the temple is a peaceful escape from the city hubbub. During the Chinese festivals, the temple premises light up with lanterns and there are cultural performances besides the other festivities. The temple’s two prayer halls can be explored and some traditional worship practices can be partaken in, for the complete cultural experience.

Entry Fee: Free

Opening Closing Time: 8 am to 9 pm

Pro-Tip: The view of the city from here is something to behold for photographers. Sit by and snap the multi-cultural potpourri that is Kuala Lumpur.

Perdana Botanical Gardens: Nature in the heart of the city

Perdana Botanical Gardens — an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. This big green lung (okay, read green oasis) of Kuala Lumpur is a 90+ hectare park with many theme gardens, a butterfly park and a deer park. You can tour the park, look for new species of birds or even have a picnic. The park also houses the National Monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of Malaysia. No greater honour than to experience this greatness!

Visit the Orchid Garden and the Hibiscus Garden where you can view Malaysia’s National Flower in all its splendor. There is a big lake in the middle of the park that always gives a soothing feeling. It’s an amazing place for those travelling with kids. This is why it is considered a one-of-a-kind, one of the best, tourist places in Kuala Lumpur for nature-loving people.

Visit Tip: Don’t forget your camera; the gardens are a photographer’s dream!

Chinatown (Petaling Street): A bustling cultural enclave

Petaling Street, the epicenter of Chinatown, is a spot that never sleeps. This is the area of bargains, food and local colour. Furthermore, various Chinese medicinal shops are also prevalent, offering traditional products such as bird nests, ginseng and herbs.

Other things to see include the logic-defying Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and the serene Guan Di Temple. And see how the influences of the immigrants have formed the ironical nature of what Kuala Lumpur is today. A visit to Kuala Lumpur is not complete without seeing Chinatown, a place where you will be taken aback time and time again.

Food to try: Hokkien mee and hawkers food at one of the many open-air restaurants.

Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia: A Showcase of Heritage

This museum is a window into the world of Islamic art and culture. If you enjoy beautiful artefacts and stunning architecture, you absolutely have to check this place out. There are galleries here with pieces of textiles, pottery and calligraphy from Islamic people around the world.

You can see little models of mosques from countries like the Taj Mahal. The museum is appropriately child-proof with interactive installments for young kids to explore the world of Islam.

Highlight: Make sure you see the collection of Qurans and the Ottoman room which has been recreated piece by piece in all its former glory. Great for anyone who enjoys learning more about the Islamic world or for anyone who simply loves museums.

KL Forest Eco Park: A Peaceful Escape in the Urban Jungle

Right within the city — the famous KL Forest Eco Park provides a quiet sanctuary. Walk on the canopy trails and take in the view of the greenery from above. This is a great place to go for a quiet afternoon. Nature lovers, add this to your list of places to visit in Kuala Lumpur!

The city’s last bit of tropical rainforest — the canopy walk is a bridge you’d walk on high up in the trees. The canopy walk is exhilarating yet calming at the same time. It’s a hit with those who want adventure with a chill-out after.

There are nature trails to walk, for you to discover the various tropical plants and animals of Malaysia. Learn more from information boards located along the trails. A learning adventure for the whole family, enjoy a nice day outdoors.

Escape Tip: Go early in the morning to enjoy cooler temperatures and a nice quiet atmosphere. It’s a good way to de-stress and get back in touch with nature without leaving the city.
