Sweden

While most of us are looking forward to warmer weather by the time March rolls around, the Swedes are positively begging for summer to arrive. In the north of Sweden, winter doesn’t just mean putting on a coat and gloves — it means a full month and a half of darkness! Here, the sun sets in late November and doesn’t rise again until mid-January. Ouch.

Luckily, the days are pretty long in March, although the weather in Sweden is still decidedly frosty. This makes it a great time to see the Northern Lights. You’ll have enough daylight hours to go sightseeing, hiking or dog-sledding across the pristine landscapes of Swedish Lapland. When night falls, put on your warmest clothes and start watching the sky!

In fact, many seasoned Aurora Borealis experts say that March is one of the best times of year to see the Northern Lights. The spring equinox usually results in increased Aurora action. Of course, this natural night-time light show is never totally guaranteed. Still, you’ll definitely have a good chance of seeing it if you visit Swedish Lapland in March.

All this means that an adventure holiday in Sweden is high on our list of the best places to visit in March. Want to join us?

Southern Italy

Okay, so it’s not exactly swimsuit season yet, but we still reckon that Italy’s Amalfi Coast is one of the best places to visit in March. Southern Italy is picture-perfect at any time of year, and it’s best to go before the weather gets unbearably hot in the summer months. From climbing mighty Vesuvius to relaxing with a glass of local wine, you’ll always have something to do.

If Easter falls in March, you’re in luck. Southern Italy is a fiercely traditional region in many ways, and the chance to watch the Italian Easter customs shouldn’t be missed. Check out the solemn processions of locals dressed in spectacular clothes that mark the entire Easter week, starting on Palm Sunday. You’ll have a chance to listen to lamentanza, which are tragic, centuries-old songs that are only sung during these events. You may also see people re-enacting scenes from the gospels in passion plays.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Italy without some great food available! Sweet, doughy breads are the stars of the show here. They often come decorated with eggs — not the chocolate treats you might be used to, but the real thing, straight from local hens. You’ll also find delightful agnello pasquale, extravagantly decorated Easter cakes in the shape of a lamb. Not feeling religious? Well, don’t worry. There’s more than enough wine and pizza for everyone, saints and sinners alike.

March is the perfect time to plunge into Italian culture and see the ancient traditions of the south. Why not sign up for an Amalfi Coast adventure and explore this gorgeous region for yourself?

Egypt

Egypt is one of the best places to visit in March if you want sunshine. In fact, we’d say that March might even be the single best time of year to head to this ancient country. Egyptian summers are impossibly hot, but the country is at its best during the spring season.

The ancient monuments are top of the list for most visitors to Egypt. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the other relics from the days of the pharaohs are sure to delight you. Many of us fall in love with Egyptian culture when we’re still at primary school — and a trip to the shifting sands of the Sahara finally gives you that chance to see it for yourself. These world-famous sites need no introduction, and they’re every bit as impressive as you’ve imagined.

Don’t forget that Egypt is a vibrant, modern country, not just a living museum. If you’re looking for warm places in March to go scuba diving or snorkelling, you’re in luck. With warm water all year round, the Red Sea is teeming with aquatic life. Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera is one of the best places in the world for springtime watersports.

Our Egypt Express Tour lets you see the very best of the country. In just five days, you’ll go from the modern, sprawling city of Cairo to the homes of the pharaohs. Take a trip back in time this spring!

India

India is another country that’s far too hot in summer but is one of the best places to go in March. Visiting at this time of year lets you avoid the monsoon season, so you won’t even need to worry about your raincoat. If you want a cultural adventure, it’s hard to beat India.

Of course, you’ll probably want to see the Taj Mahal while you’re there — and yes, this timeless monument to the power of love really is one of the best places to visit in March. Feeling nervous about going to such a romantic monument alone? Don’t worry. Join a group tour, and you’ll have an instant group of friends to accompany you. We can’t promise romance, but you’re bound to have a good time!

You should also take the chance to explore India’s sacred cities like Varanasi, where the holy waters of the Ganges flow. Every year, pilgrims nearing the final years of their lives flock to Varanasi, believing it is the holiest place in India to die and be cremated. While you’re there, don’t miss the stunning Ganga Aarti, a powerful fire ceremony that takes place at dusk each evening on the banks of the Ganges.

Spend eleven days in India with us, seeing the most mystical and mysterious sites in this glorious country. It’s a great way to enjoy a spring trip that you’ll never forget.

Just make sure to save your energy for a night of dancing to infectious Latin rhythms.

Your spring trip to Colombia also lets you enjoy some of the world’s best hikes. From the Andes mountains to thick rainforest, you’ll find something new at every turn. South Africa

While Europeans are waiting impatiently for summer, it’s autumn in the southern hemisphere. In South Africa, the temperatures have cooled down a bit, making this gorgeous country one of the best places to visit in March.

Spring is a great time to explore the stunning coastal city of Cape Town. The sea is a little chilly, but the weather is still balmy and mild, ideal for a hike up Table Mountain. More adventurous travellers can head inland to South Africa’s famous game reserves. The biggest of all is Kruger National Park, a sprawling reserve twice the size of the country of Cyprus and home to the Big Five, as well as many other examples of South African wildlife.

March is the wet season in Kruger, so you’ll see lush grasses, full waterholes and — if you’re lucky — lots of baby animals taking their first steps. Join us for a South African adventure and experience the magic of nature!

Mexico

Last but not least, Mexico has to be one of the best places to visit in March. Mexico is a spring break favourite, so if you want to join the crowds of American college students who flock here each and every year, why not head to Cancun? This city is where the party never stops, so make sure you’ve got your dancing shoes on.

Don’t worry, though — there’s more to Mexico than just drinking and partying. That’s why we put it on our list of good places to visit in March. You’ll have a chance to see ancient Mayan temples, snorkel in the warm Gulf waters, hike through old mangrove forests and discover the remnants of centuries-old civilisations. And yes — the tequila will still be flowing at the bars when you’re finished!
